FAQ – Skin Peels

What do chemical skin peels do?

Chemical peels can correct/diminish a variety of skin imperfections
such as blemishes, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, acne scars, and sun damage.
They exfoliate the outer layers of dead skin, revealing a new skin layer with improved tone, texture, and color.
In addition to full facial rejuvenation, certain types of skin peels can also be used for spot treatments and as a way to rejuvenate skin elsewhere on the body. The most common areas besides the face are the chest, neck, arms, and hands.

What are chemical skin peels?

In performing chemical peels, your skincare technician applies a layer of an acid such as glycolic, salicylic, or retinoic (sometimes a combination of acids is used) or a phenol to the skin.
After a chemical peel, the outer layers of skin in the treated area slough off, revealing
a new layer of skin. e. Light skin peels, such as lactic acid peels, are so mild that there is little
recovery time, and improvement in the skin’s appearance is immediately visible. Medium peels such as the VI Peel or the Vitalize Peel can have anywhere from 3-5 days downtime.

What are the different types of chemical skin peels?

We offer a wide range of skin peels,
each indicated for different types and degrees of skin problems. The following are examples of
some the most popular peels. (For information on other chemical peels please contact us for a
complimentary consultation) :

• The Vitalize Peel® uses a unique blend of safe but effective acids to cause chemical exfoliation

• of the epidermis, or outer layer of the skin. Skin regeneration following this chemical peel

• results in a fresh, organized, and healthy epidermis. The outcome is a smoother and more even complexion and an improvement in pigment changes.

• The VI Peel is an effective treatment to improve several skin conditions and issues including acne, uneven skin texture, uneven tone, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, sagging skin, age and sun spots, enlarged pores and hyperpigmentation. The VI Peel also provides a more youthful look by brightening the overall appearance of the skin and improving collagen production. The VI Peel, like some other chemical peels, can also assist in removing precancerous cells.

Which type of chemical peel is right for me?

Only a qualified skin care expert can determine which type of skin peel is appropriate for you. In deciding who is a good candidate for a chemical peel, we must consider several factors, including the patient’s medical history, pigmentation, the skin condition to be treated (especially the extent of sun damage), and desired results.

Can chemical peels be performed on areas other than the face?

Yes. Common areas are the neck,
chest, hands, and arms. The Vi Peel, in particular, provides dramatic results on the chest and hands.

Are chemical peels painful?

In general, patients only feel a mild stinging sensation during light or medium chemical peels.

Will my skin literally “peel”?

Chemical peels remove the outer layers of skin to reduce or eliminate the appearance of a number of skin imperfections and conditions. After a patient undergoes a skin peel, the treated layers of skin gradually flake away, revealing a fresh new layer of skin.

How long is the recovery period after a skin peel?

The recovery time after a chemical peel depends on the type of peel administered because each type of peel affects the skin to a different degree.
